Song in the night

Reading Acts 16 this morning~after Paul and Silas had been beaten and thrown into jail, and

"...about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God..."

Oh Lord, that you would always be my Song. Day or night. Good times or bad. You, Lord, are the Giver of songs. Songs sung in the darkness of night...

"His song with be with me in he night, a prayer to the God of my life." Psalm 42:8

I love what Spurgeon says:

"Any fool can sing in the day. It is easy to sing when we an read the notes by daylight; but the skillful singer is he who can sing when there is not a ray of light to read by...Song in the night come only from God; they are not in the power of men."

"I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul will boast in the Lord... Oh magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together." Psalm 34

Lord, You are not only my song, You are my happy ending.

Great is Thy Faithfulness

"Amazing Grace" is my new favorite movie. The soundtrack is just beautiful. I was listening as I cleaned the kitchen, and this song just pricked my heart, and my worship of Him just flowed out of me.

I needed to see the lyrics, so here they are:

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.

Refrain

Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Refrain

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Refrain

This is the version I'm listening to at the moment:

I'm so in love with hymns right now.

Maybe it's because we're singing hymns at church right now. Maybe it's because I see the beauty of these old hymns in a way I haven't seen before. Maybe it's because they seem so refreshing and inspiring after years of singing "contemporary" songs. (Now I don't dislike contemporary worship songs. That's not what this is about.)

Maybe it was singing "I Surrender All" and it NOT being during an extended invitation at the end of a message that led me to the beauty and simplicity of that song and reminded me of how much I love these hymns I sang so absentmindedly as a kid and young adult.

 I'm so glad my kids are being exposed to them. I LOVE that they heard "I'll Fly Away" for the first time last week and said it was their new favorite song. I'm so thankful for these simple expressions of devotion. I mean "Trust and Obey"? That will preach. To me, anyway...

I mean come on...

When we walk with the Lord
  In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way;
  While we do His good will,
  He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

    Trust and obey,
    For there's no other way
    To be happy in Jesus,
      But to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise,
  Not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
  Not a doubt or a fear,
  Not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear,
  Not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
  Not a grief or a loss,
  Not a frown or a cross,
But is blest if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove
  The delights of His love,
Until all on the altar we lay;
  For the favor He shows,
  And the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet
  We will sit at His feet,
Or we'll walk by His side in the way;
  What He says we will do;
  Where He sends. we will go,
Never fear, only trust and obey.

In my church growing up, we sang "How Great Thou Art" to close every single service. A way to run song clear in the ground must be to sing it too much. (I'm sure this was done with good intent. It is a good song. Maybe it deserves to be sung at the close of every service.) It closes out the "Amazing Grace" soundtrack and as I listened with fresh ears, I got chills and tears.

O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy Hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim: "My God, how great Thou art!"

Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art.
Then sings my soul, My Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, How great Thou art!

One more:

(May I add that when I sing to myself, in my head, I sound just like Carrie Underwood?  So glad I nailed down of whom I remind myself.)

I'm on a hymn rampage. I can't get enough. And I think I stole a hymnal from our old church. Or perhaps I was given the hymnal when our  church bought new ones. Yeah, I'm going with that. Anyway, I'm about to locate that sucker and sing aloud these great hymns as part of my worship this week. And you know what? I'm going to sing every single 3rd stanza.

Song for the Day

Take me and invade me
Make me someone new
Wake me from the dead
And break me with the truth

Move me and disturb me
Interrupt my peace
Tear open my heart
And pull me to my knees

There's a world outside
That is burning
While I'm turning blinded eyes
While I stand by

I won't survive
To live this ordinary life
I'm not alive
To live this ordinary life

And I will try
To see this world I live in
With Your eyes
To love this world You've given
With my life
To see this world I live in
With Your eyes
To love this world You've given
With my life

Your Love is Extravagant

I was working in the kitchen with the forever present Pandora set to my favorite channel. This song came on, and the singer's voice made me pause. It was a unique voice, and that's what made me pause at first. Then I started listening to the words. They were raw and just shot right through me. I had to share them.

Extravagant:
 –adjective

1. spending much more than is necessary or wise; wasteful: an extravagant shopper.

2. excessively high: extravagant expenses; extravagant prices.

3. exceeding the bounds of reason, as actions, demands, opinions, or passions.

4. going beyond what is deserved or justifiable: extravagant praise
Yes. Your love is all of the above.

Your love is extravagant,
Your friendship so intimate,
I find I'm moving to the rhythms of your grace,
Your fragrance is intoxicating,
in our secret place,
Your love is extravagant.

Spread wide in the arms of Christ,

is a love that covers sin.
No great love have I ever known,
You considered me a friend
You've captured my heart again,
You've captured my heart again.

Your love is extravagant,

Your friendship so intimate,
I find I'm moving to the rhythms of your grace,
Your fragrance is intoxicating,
in our secret place.
Your love is extravagant.

Spread wide in the arms of Christ,

is a love that covers sin.
No great love have I ever known,
You considered me a friend.

Spread wide in the arms of Christ,

is a love that covers sin.
No great love have I ever known,
You considered me a friend.

You've captured my heart again...

It's so funny how God works...

I woke up rather somberly today. I wasn't depressed or anything, but there are a lot of people who today are facing huge, real challenges. They specifically asked for prayer today for things going on. I knew that today I would need to be quiet, peaceful and prayerful.

My Bible study time was difficult, as my mind kept wandering to these people. I was actually glad when it was time for me to go pound the pavement, so I could just pour out my thoughts and prayers before Christ. I grabbed Fluffy and my music, and we headed out.

I didn't get very far before it started raining. I ran the dog back home, because no matter how cute she is, wet dog is not a pleasant smell. I took off my music so I wouldn't ruin my phone, and then, it was just me, the quiet and the rain.

Oh my gosh.

God very literally rained down on me. It was like every drop of rain was a tiny bit of Him, and in every drop He sang out one of His promises, His words and His song.

I love you.

I have redeemed you.

I have chosen you.

I have called you by name.

You are mine.

I am gracious.

I am compassionate.

I am slow to anger.

I am rich in love.

I am good to all.

I have written you on the palm of my hand.

I see all that happens to you.

I am with you.

I will never leave you.

I will never forsake you.

I am orchestrating everything in your life for one good purpose.

I am worthy of trust.

You can't comprehend my love for you.

Do not fear.

I am with you.

Don't be discouraged.

I am your God.

I will strengthen you.

I will help you.

I am upholding you with my righteous right hand.

I care for you...

Each drop was a tangible drop of His love.

I am very aware of the powerful, mighty God I serve. I fear Him. I stand in reverence of Him. He is jealous. His voice is like rushing waters. He is too enormous and complex for my mind to comprehend.

But this morning, He allowed me to just feel tiny drops of His love. Quite the opposite of the glory He showed to Moses, this was the sweet, gentle caress of a God who is tenderly caring for His child. It was almost too much to bear. That rain fell on me, and I could almost hear Him audibly whispering over me.

Wow.

I have walked in obedience to Him, trying my best to not question Him, resting in the knowledge of His sovereignty. I got to a point where I started trusting that He may or may not ever reveal why He tells me to do what He does. But this week? He's allowing me to see tiny glimpses of what He's doing with that obedience. And it's no understatement to say that I'm blown away.

I want to sit, alone and quiet, in reflection and praise. And I can't. But in the midst of the (not so) precious storm that my life is at the moment, I can stay quiet in my spirit with a running dialog that praises Him and thanks Him for all that He is doing. (...and I can burst into tears a random moments throughout the day, overwhelmed with all of this. I have turned into the biggest crybaby you have ever met. It's the payback for making fun of certain friends all these years...)

And today I am so thankful, that in spite of all the huge things He's doing in my life right now, He allowed something very common like rain to break down His love into tiny droplets that so communicated all that He is to me.

I am just in awe. And I had to share.
